Students attending Highland's rural schools were often given ornate certificates of promotion as they advanced from grade to grade. This example is that of U. Sidney Beach, dated June 16, 1911, evidencing his promotion from first to second grade at the "Highland" or "Union" school in Highland Station. Note that the first grade curriculum included reading, arithmetic, penmanship and spelling, i.e., the traditional "readin', writ'n, and 'rithmatic." The "hickory stick" (or in the case of one Union school teacher, a fraternity paddle) was also employed when required!
