Introduction

This is a verbatim transcription of the 1850 Federal Census of Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan, preserving the format, spellings and abbreviations found in the original microfilmed census rolls.  For example, if the original record uses the abbreviation "Geo" with no period, it is so transcribed rather than substituting "George" or "Geo."  There are two exceptions to this practice:  (1) Periods are added to abbreviated surnames such as "St. John," and (2) ditto marks ["] and/or the abbreviation "Do." have been replaced with the word or abbreviation they reference.  This will facilite finding such names or words using your browser's "find" command or the site's search engines.  Where the handwriting on the original census roll is illegible or unclear the entry is flagged with a question mark (?).  Unusual or phonetic spellings of names and words is preserved, but the more common or preferred spelling will be given either in brackets and/or in notes which follow the given family's entry. 

All of the 21 pages of this census indicate they were enumerated by S. Stevens, Ass't Marshall, in October, 1850.  The specific date each page was completed is given under its page number.  In theory all data is as of June 1, 1850, but it is often helpful to also know the date a specific entry was made.

Ancestry.com indexes this man under the name "Grun," but he is the Rev. Oliver Hazard Perry Green, b. May 20, 1825, at Lansing, Michigan; m. Louisa J., daughter of  Abel and Ruth Thomas b. Aug 17, 1831, in Ohio.  A Green family web site says he served at White Lake, Davisburg, Holly, Pontiac, Richfield Center, Owosso and Corunna and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Conference of Detroit.  He spent four years at Hartland before retiring to a farm in Holly, Michigan.

This is Squire Washington Rowe, born June 1, 1815, at Camillus, Onondaga county; married March 26, 1835, at Parma, Monroe County, New York, Dolly Castle.  The family came to Highland in 1835 where Squire W. Rowe soon became a man of prominence, serving over twenty terms as township supervisor before being elected to the Michigan legislature in 1864.   His parents, Daniel and Polly, usually employed an older spelling of the family name "Roe" while Squire and his family favored the spelling "Rowe."

This is Benjamin F. Davison, the son of Norman and Huldah (Brown) Davison, b. April 12, 1821, at Avon, Livingston County, New York; m. 1st Huldah N. Gue, daughter of Solomon and Joanna (Lewis) Gue; m. 2nd Sarah Sophia Wells, daughter of Philip and Sophia (Fuller) Wells.  The gender given for Benjamin above is obviously in error, but is so recorded on the original census roll.  Margrett, age 23, is actually Mariette Davison, the sister of Benjamin F. Davison.  Although not indicated on this or any other census, she was blind and lived with her brother her entire life.

This family's surname looks like "Richman" and it is so indexed by Ancestry.com.  Other evidence, however, indicates the surname should be spelled "Richmond."  Ancestry.com likewises indexes the first name of the head of household as "Alver" although it is actually "Abner."  It is unclear what the "F" means for the occupation of Jane.  It seems the census taker may have started to write "Farmer," then realized his error.  In that case, however, one would expect the "F" to have been crossed out.

Even through written twice, the surname of this family is impossible to decipher.  As noted, the entry on page 342 appears to begin with "Feu" whereas the entry on page 343 looks like "Fi" (including the tittle over the "i").  Ancestry.com indexes this family as "Feinman" although there is nothing to suggest the family was of German and/or Jewish extraction.  The presence of the aged Samuel Gregory in the household suggests he was the father of Cornelia Feumann/Finnan, which may help establish the family's identity.
