Alfred Barrett was born in Connecticut in 1805, and married Corinthia "Corinthy" Richmond, born in 1810 [Note 1].  The couple lived for a time in Genesee County, New York, and Ashtabula County, Ohio, before finally settling in Highland Township in 1838.   Here Alfred purchased land in Section 6, including what is now the northwest corner of Hickory Ridge and Clyde Roads.  The patent for this purchase is seen below.   Alfred and Corinthia (Richmond) Barrett had a family of eight children, i.e.: (i) David S. Barrett, born December 7, 1833; (ii) Alfred Richmond Barrett, born December 30, 1835; (iii) Adelisa Barrett, born 1837; died young; (iv) Adelisa Edith (Addie) Barrett, born September 6, 1842; (v) William H. Barrett, born October 29, 1843; died 1846;  (vi) Sarah Barrett, born 1845; (vii) Walter J. Barrett, born 1848; and (viii) Alfred Richmond Barrett, born December 30, 1835.  Alfred Barrett died in 1865, while his wife Corinthia died in 1877.

Note 1 - Members of the Richmond family also settled in Highland.   The 1850 Census shows the family of Abner Richmond (spelled "Richman"), age 65, living adjacent to David Barrett.
