Melvin Cleo Heffelbower, shown here as a young boy, was born at Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan, on October 19, 1898, the son of John Wesley and Lilly V. (Withey) Heffelbower. By 1910 the Hefflebower family had moved to Flint, Genesee County, where John W. Heffelbower was employed in an auto factory [Note 1]. Following her marriage, Luella (Chase) Heffelbower also moved to Flint, where her husband Melvin was employed as a truck driver for an auto company [Note 2].
