William Needham was born in 1835 in or near Tottenham, England, the son of Thomas and Mary (Stephens) England.  At age 19 he emigrated to Stratford, Canada, where he married Mary Ann O'Toole, by whom he had children: (iii) William J. Needham, born 1867; died 1884; (ii) Martha Needham, born 1874; died 1897; (iii) Thomas Needham, born 1875; died 1914; (iv) Minnie Needham, born 1877; and (v) Mary E. Needham.   Following the death of his first wife William Needham married second Mary Ann Warriner, born 1865, the daughter of Richard and Mary (Hollingsworth) Warriner.  In 1881 the couple left Canada and came to Highland Township, purchasing a home on the southeast corner of Milfold Road and current M-59.  By his second marriage William Needham had five more children: (vi) George R. Needham, born 1882; died 1898; (vii) Maud E. Needham, born 1884; died 1925; (viii) William Needham, Jr., born July 7, 1886; (ix) Charles Edward Needham, born December 13, 1891; and (x) Richard Needham, born March 28, 1902.  The photo below, taken circa 1902, shows (left to right) Maud Needham, Mary Ann Needham, Richard Needham, William Needham, Charles Needham and William "Bill" Needham, Jr.
