John and Nancy Atley had one son, John H. Atley.  Born in 1886, John H. Atley married March 18, 1909, at Highland Township, Lillian M. Van Buren.  The couple lived for a time in Burlington, Lapeer County, Michigan, where John H. worked as manager of the local telephone company [Note 1].   In or soon after 1920, however, John "Jr.," as he was often called, joined his parents in Highland Township.  Here he and his wife purchased the general store previously owned by Sidney Hulbert, on the southeast corner of Milford and Livingston Roads.  The couple ran the store for the next 25 years before selling it to Elbert Donaldson in November, 1945.  The photo below appears to have been taken in the late 1920's or early 1930's and shows John H. and Lillian Atley standing outside their store, looking east.  Note the name on the awning, i.e., "J. & L. Atley;" the early gasoline pump; and the sign for "Vernor's" ginger-ale.
