Lorenzo Dow Ruggles, the son of Noble and Anna (Merchant) Ruggles, spent his early years teaching, including one year in charge of the High School at Milford.  In 1856 he engaged in the mercantile business in Milford, where he ran a general store for several years.  On September 26, 1858, he married at Hamlin, New York, Lydia A. Cary, born December 4, 1833, the daughter of Richard and Polly (Sutton) Cary.  The couple had four sons, i.e., (i) Frank C. Ruggles, born 1862; died at age 2; (ii) Fred C. Ruggles, born October, 1865; (iii) Charles Edward Ruggles, born June 17, 1868; and (iv) Harry O. Ruggles, born 1873.  The photo below shows Lorenzo and Lydia with their three surviving sons, i.e., (left to right) Charles E., Fred C. and Harry O.
